Antique 9ct Rose Gold, Hairwork and Envelope Locket Mourning Ring - Size R / 9

£445.00

This antique mourning ring is made from 9ct rose gold, with intricately woven hairwork running inside of the band and hand engraved panels above. The front features an extremely rare locket compartment, designed as an envelope! This is also hand-engraved and it opens, via 2 hinged flaps, to reveal an oval compartment beneath. It’s hallmarked for 9ct gold within the band, from the Chester Assay Office, with the date letter for 1911, and is stamped 9 on both the opening flaps of the envelope. It’s engraved with the initials B.A and the date 16.7.12 (16th July 1912) within the band.

It’s about a UK size R or US 9. It weighs 2.8 grams.

Condition: Good antique condition. The band and hairwork are in very good condition with barely any wear. The envelope has been repaired in the past - there are traces of soft solder around the sides, a small gap underneath where the clasp fastens, and the side which holds upper flap’s hinge has been replaced completely with what looks like brass. This has all been done very professionally and the jeweller who did it did an excellent job; the envelope feels completely stable, opens and closes perfectly and you only notice the repair if you look carefully and know what you’re looking at! Still, a lovely and rare antique ring, with a price that reflects the repair.
