Antique Silver and Gold Backed Paste Cross in Fitted Silver Coffin Shaped Box
This is a wonderful piece! It’s a Victorian cross pendant housed within it’s original fitted coffin-shaped box. The cross itself is made from silver and gold, and it’s set with paste stones. Each paste sits within a silver bezel, but every bezel and the bale at the top are backed in solid gold, so it’s only gold which touches your skin. The bale is hinged so it could easily be attached to a collar necklace. Unusually, it comes in it’s original fitted silver box which is shaped like a coffin and has a large bale at the top so it’s wearable. There’s a push-button clasp to the side and the lid has a sprung opening mechanism. Inside, the lid is lined with silk and the base with brown velvet. When you remove the cross you can see the little indents in the velvet and silk, where it’s been sitting in place for so many years. The box has numerous hallmarks around the outer edge for 900 grade silver with the maker’s initials P.S or F.S. The country assay marks are indistinct but I believe it to be Austro-Hungarian.
The cross is 6.1cm north to south with the bale and 3.6cm east to west. Weighs 6.2 grams. The box is 6.9cm not including the bale at the top (8.2cm in total, with bale), 4.9cm wide and 1.9cm deep. It weighs 58 grams.
Condition: Very good antique condition. One paste stone on the cross has been replaced at some point, it’s the lowest large stone on the bottom leg of the cross. A few of the little claws holding the stones have been lost and some of the tiny pastes have dulled with age, but you have to look very closely to notice this and overall it’s in nice condition. The box is in wonderful order! It’s very sturdy so has no dinks or damage, just the usual light surface scuffs which you’d expect. The hinge and closure are strong and work perfectly, clicking shut and springing open as they should.
