French Antique 800 Silver Iris Flowers Art Nouveau Vesta Locket / Pendant
This antique vesta case is made from 800 grade silver and is likely to be French in origin. It was originally designed to be hung from a gentleman’s pocket watch chain, to hold matches to keep them safe and dry (the ridged bit on the base was for striking them), but today you can pop any little keepsake inside. It’s beautifully embossed on both sides with an iris flower design, which during the late Victorian era, when this was made, symbolised faith, courage and admiration. The inside of the vesta is gilded and it’s stamped as 800 silver on the rim on the base. It dates from circa 1890.
The main body of the vesta measures 5.0cm long, 3.5cm wide and 1.4cm deep in the centre. Weighs 18 grams.
Condition: Very good uncleaned antique condition. The lid snaps shut and stays closed as it should. Just has the usual marks and tarnish to the silver which you'd expect on an antique item.
