1916 Sterling Silver Unusual Octagonal Freestanding Photo Frame Locket / Pendant
Here I have an unusual sterling silver locket from 1916. I believe it was designed to be dual purpose; so wearable as a locket but also useable as a photo frame which is freestanding when it’s open. I presume this was so you could still see your photos at night when you took it off and put it on your bedside table. The sleek and undecorated design, along with the year it was made, makes me wonder if it was intended for a gentleman, going away to fight in the First World War, to take photos of his family with him. It closes via a little latch on the side and there’s a UK hallmark on the base and also on the little removable frames inside, with the date letter for 1916, from the Chester Assay Office.
The main body of the locket measures 4.9cm long, 4.8cm wide and 0.7cm deep. With the bale ring, the total height is 6.1cm. Weighs 37 grams.
Condition: Good uncleaned antique condition. The hinge and closure work well and it seems to stay shut. There are some little surface dinks and scratches on both the front and back, commensurate with its age which I’ve tried to show in the photos; nothing major, just signs of being loved and used.
