Victorian Rock Hammer Propelling Pencil with Stanhope of Isle of Wight
This antique propelling pencil is in the shape of a fossil hunter’s rock hammer. It has a stanhope lens inside, and when you peek through, you see views of the Isle of Wight (very hard to photograph!). You twist the bottom of the pencil to move the lead in and out and it writes perfectly. It appears to be made of silver plated brass.
Measures 5.0cm long with the lead tucked away inside. Weighs 24.5 grams.
Condition: Good antique condition. There is a tiny bit of damage on one side in the form of a very small hole; I suspect this is where it would have originally had a bale loop so it could be hung on a chain or chatelaine and at some point this has ripped off…however, this doesn’t affect the pencil at all and is purely cosmetic. Otherwise, it just has the usual light wear and tarnish which you’d expect on an antique item. I’ve seen very similar sell online for hundreds of US$ so I think this is priced sensibly, bearing in mind the little bit of damage!
