1986 Vintage British Museum Gilded Sterling Silver Love Token Necklace
This vintage pendant and chain are made from sterling silver which has been gilded, to look like gold. It was made by the British Museum in 1986 and it’s a replica of one of their collection; a 15th century gold pendant, decorated with an ivy leaf in the centre with an inscription around the outside which reads “tristes en plesire” (sad in pleasure). There are 3 freshwater pearl drops hanging from tiny chains at the bottom of the heart. The inscription side was originally intended to be worn on the back, so it was hidden from everyone but the wearer, and the front is decorated with a teardrop shaped pattern. It hangs on a 16.5” gilded sterling chain, also hallmarked from the British Museum.
The pendant is 3.1cm long including the bale at the top and 1.3cm wide. The chain is 16.5”. With the chain, it weighs 4.4 grams.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. The gilding is in good order with no signs of rubbing/wear. Just has the usual light marks and tarnish which you'd expect on a vintage item.
