Antique 18ct Rolled Gold Handpainted Portrait of Goldfinches and Magpies Pendant

£135.00
sold out

This antique pendant is made from 18ct rolled gold over base metal, and it dates from around 1910. It features a beautiful handpainted miniature portrait of a country scene, with a goldfinch, perched upon a thistle, with another finch flying away into the background, and if you look very closely, a pair of magpies (two for joy!) pecking at the ground behind. It sits behind domed glass with a bevelled edge and it’s set permanently within the locket, so the bale cannot be unscrewed and the picture cannot be removed. The colours are very hard to capture in a photo but it is vibrant and beautifully executed! The back is signed A.R.G, who I cannot identify but they seemed to be active around the turn of the 20th century, and “18ct rolled gold”. As mentioned, the bale at the top is fixed in place (hence why the picture is protected and in such good order!) and has 3 lobes for threading a chain through.

The pendant is 4.2cm long including the bale and 2.6cm wide. It weighs 6.7 grams.

Condition: Very good antique condition. No chips or damage to the glass dome and the painting has been protected fantastically so is in pristine condition. There is a little rubbing and wear to the rolled gold, mainly around the edge so the base metal beneath shows through if you look closely.
