Victorian Sterling Silver Unusual Fly On Leaf Bug Brooch

£88.00
sold out

Here I have an antique brooch, made from sterling silver. It depicts a little fly, sitting upon a leaf. The leaf has a fluted edge, a little stalk poking out and engraved vein details. The fly is firmly riveted onto the leaf and it’s set with a red paste and 2 marcasites. In Victorian times, flies symbolised secrets and secret keeping, as in the phrase “a fly on the wall”. The back has a c-clasp and steel pin and although unmarked, the brooch acid tests as sterling. The photos are taken outside in a mix of bright sun and shade.

Measures 3.3cm x 2.9cm wide. It weighs 5 grams.

Condition: Very good uncleaned vintage condition. The clasp works perfectly. I think the marcasites are probably later replacements but that doesn’t detract. Overall it just has the usual light surface marks which you'd expect on a vintage item.
