Antique Silver & Onyx Carved Intaglio of Goddess Nike Ring - Sz S / 9.5
Here I have an antique silver ring, set with a carved black onyx intaglio, depicting the winged goddess Nike, who is the Greek goddess of victory. She’s holding a laurel wreath and a palm frond, which are both symbols of victory. It’s very much designed to look like a Roman ring, but I suspect it was made later and was a Grand Tour acquisition from the 19th century, though of course I may be wrong and it may be much older! The photos are taken outdoors, in direct sunlight and shade.
It’s a UK size S (US 9.5). The front of the ring is 1.2cm north to south and the inlaid panel is 1.5cm by 1.0cm. The band tapers to 3mm at the back.
Weighs a chunky 14.4 grams.
** Other rings in the photos are not for sale **
Condition: Very good uncleaned vintage condition. No damage to the intaglio. The silver has a good many little knocks and marks, commensurate with it being an antique piece. There are no hallmarks but it acid tests as silver.
