Fine 1883 Sterling Silver Sunflowers Vinaigrette Box Pendant
This antique vinaigrette is made from sterling silver. On the outside, it has a scalloped edge, with hand engraving on every face. One side has an empty cartouche for the engraving of initials, surrounded by stylised leaves. The other has two small sunflowers, which in the Victorian language of flowers symbolised adoration, so you can imagine this was a gift to a very special loved one. It’s beautiful workmanship; even the edges are engraved! When you open the lid you see that it’s gilded inside, and the hinged grill is pierced and engraved with an acanthus leaf design. This lifts to reveal the space beneath where you’d put a piece of cotton scented with perfumed oils. It’s hallmarked on on the lid, from the Birmingham Assay Office, with the date letter for 1883.
The main body of the vinaigrette (not including the bale ring) measures 3.9cm long, 3.1cm wide and 1.1cm deep. Weighs 21.7 grams.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The engraving is crisp and sharp. Both hinges are in very good order. The lid closes with a click and stays shut. The grill inside is held very firmly in place and closes securely. Just has some very light surface scratches here and there as you’d expect on an antique piece and a little pitting to the silver within the bottom of the central compartment where the contents at some point reacted with the silver.
