Antique French Silver, Seed Pearl and Portrait Mourning Locket Backed Brooch
This antique French brooch is made from silver, and set with tiny seed pearls in the frame. It houses a hand-painted portrait of a seated lady. The original glass is in place to protect her. The back has another glazed panel which can be removed so a lock of hair could be tucked inside. It still has the original blue paper backing though this is very fragile! There’s a hallmark stamp on the pin which I think is probably the French boar’s head for 800 silver, though it’s a bit indistinct. I suspect the back originally had a foldable pendant bale attached but this has long since been lost. However, you could pop a split ring through the top scroll of the frame if you wished to wear it as a pendant.
Measures 4.1cm x 3.0cm. It weighs 9.3 grams.
Condition: Very good uncleaned antique condition. All the pearls appear to be original. Both glass panels are in excellent condition. The clasp works well. The portrait possibly has some dirt around it, but on looking at the back, it’s never been removed from the frame so I’d recommended leaving it as it is.
